Changing Times!

I received this by email (thanks, Mom!) and found it very interesting.  I've always said I didn't like change, but maybe in some ways it is a good thing......read on, and travel back with me in history to a simpler day -- my Grammy was 10 years old and this was the world she knew,  an uncomplicated time (but sometimes scary -- especially the part about hair care!)

THE YEAR 1908

This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine!
The year is 1908.
One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some statistics for the Year 1908 :
************ ********* ********* ******

The average life expectancy was 47 years.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles
Of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower

The average wage in 1908 was 22 cents per hour.

The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year .

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,
A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME .

Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which
Were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard. '

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used
Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from
Entering into their country for any reason.

Five leading causes of death were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas , Nevada, was only 30!!!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea
Hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write.
Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, 'Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health.' ( Shocking? DUH! )

Eighteen percent of households had at least
One full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE ! U.S.A. !

Now I forwarded this from someone else without typing
It myself, and sent it to you and others all over Canada & U.S.A
Possibly the world, in a matter of seconds!

Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.
IT STAGGERS THE MIND!!!!!!!!!!!

GOD RULES

I've been thinking alot lately about suffering. The needs are so great as many around us are going through various testings and trials. In our ladies' Bible study, we are slowly going through the Book of Romans. We meet on Wednesday mornings, and yesterday's lesson was about God's Peace -- peace with God and the peace of God. Once we have accepted Christ as Savior we have peace with God. We begin a personal relationship with God, based on the blood of Jesus. No one can take that away, for God has given it to us.

But the peace of God is a very different matter. "The peace of God is to have perfect peace of mind and heart, no worry, an untroubled heart in spite of circumstances." We talked about how to access that peace in the midst of suffering -- physical pain, emotional loss, loneliness, death of a child -- and then the widespread pain of global disasters -- cyclone, earthquakes, terrorism, war, famine. The Scripture teaches us that God has promised us peace. Our God is bigger than anything or anyone that can threaten or harm us. We are in His hands. Why do we not experience His peace? Because we have taken our eyes off Him. God has a purpose in all of our trials. We can trust God when He allows tribulations in our lives -- He is using them to some advantage for us.

Have you asked God what He wants to teach you through this painful circumstance?

Lord, You are faithful. We trust you. Even when we don't understand. You are God. Thank You for Your everlasting, powerful and tender arms that hold us. Yes, thank You for that peace that is beyond our understanding, yet so real. We look to you, our Creator, Sustainer, Shepherd and Savior. YOU RULE!

Here are a couple of verses to turn to today, tomorrow, or any time your feelings lead you to doubt or fear. I'm writing these down on index cards so they are handy at a moment's notice!

John 14:27, Philippians 4:6-7, Psalm 121 -- the whole thing!

P.S. I just love Elisabeth Elliott and her sweet yet deep insights into God's Word. Following is a link to her daily devotional:

Hey, thanks for "listening".

Welcome, Spring!

Laura is pleased with her garden -- most of the plants made it through the winter just fine. The pansies were just adopted from Kern's, however. Aren't they pretty??

We've waited so long......but, finally, the trees are green and blossom-y, the breeze is cool most of the time (as opposed to freezing cold, that is), the peepers have been peeping, the bunnies hopping, the bears have awakened -- well, you get the idea. We did have a young bear in the yard last week, but, alas, I did not have my camera....will try to get one posted one of these days.

Concerto # 2 and a half by Samuel

I thought it was about time for some fresh grand-kid videos, so while babysitting one day last week we had a little photo session. Samuel loves music and especially loves to play the piano. I think it's interesting how he is learning how to make the various notes. The video is a little lengthy, but I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Celebrate Respect for Chickens Day!

I don't know how I missed it, but May 4th was an important day to honor one of God's creatures that has played an important role in all our lives...the chicken. Who else gives and gives and keeps on giving? Barbequed, stewed, casseroled, hot 'n spicy, or cool and salad-y we love 'em. Then, there are the omelets, egg salads, and Easter eggs! Seriously, though, I do have alot of respect for the chickens I have known and even loved. Remember, kids, the two chickens we hatched in school, took home and cared for? ....(ummmm, what were their names again??...)  Until that sly fox or wicked weasel showed up one night! I still feel sad and a little guilty about that.

Well, in honor of our feathered friends, let us breathe deeply (but not if you happen to be in the chicken coop) and.......all together now---

Cockadoodle doo!!

International Respect for Chickens Day
Show that world that chickens do matter on this international day to promote the compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl.

A Father's Love

Job 19:25 But as for me I know that my Redeemer liveth,

And at last he will stand up upon the earth.

This is a beautiful example of a father's love -- and what great love our Father has shown us, that we should be called the children of God!
